If you already know the name of the creators of the test, its date and a description, you have enough for your report.

The other answer has nothing to do with your question.

I am trying to do my math, but I keep switching numbers out when I take them from book to scratch paper.
Is this dyslexia?
It is not like im losing my place, it will have to be with the numbers from the same problem or from before, but they are in my head and will not leave. I cannot not remember them and I recall them into the number I am working with causing it to be written wrong. Like last problem I remember on the number was 190 and a wrote 119 because the numbers 90 and 19 were in the problem before it. or at least thats all i can figure.

This doesn’t quite sound like dyslexia. Numbers such as 9 may be confused with the letter P, or numbers may be interpreted backwards – 123 may be seen as 321.

Try using a ruler or strip of paper placed under the math problem you’re working on. It will help keep you from losing your place.

That is a mild disability.

My boyfriend is 23 has applied for ssi and also got denied. He has slipped through all the cracks with school and never graduated. We live in a small town and all the people who help with dyslexia only help people who are under the age of 18. Running out of ideas and not sure what to do he wants to get his GED and even the school says they don’t have the resources to help him. Any ideas at all would be very helpful.

Many public libraries have Adult Literacy Programs (teaching adults to read). You may want to check with your city and county libraries.

I don’t know where you live, but try this…they may help you locate a program that is appropriate for him:

Is there a "cure" for ADD and Dyslexia?
I had problems with both of them in school and now want to go to college.
If no cure, then what can I do about them?
I really had a lot of problems reading the books. I have been to college and did not do well. They say it takes an avg person an hour or less to read a chapter in a text book. It takes me about four or five hrs. and I still have trouble comprehending it.
I have a ton of problems with math! I can’t comprehend numbers at all! I don’t even want to take a math class.
When it comes to Algebra, I really get lost and can’t understand it or do it at all.
I have failed Algebra I Twice in college. I had a tutor and I still can’t do it and failed it both times.
I need to do something else.
Doctors and Teachers have diagnosed me with both of these problems and it is documented in my old high school and with my old Doctor. One local college has told me that they can give me some help, such as getting the books on tape.
But is there an actual “CURE” for these things? Or at least some medication; or something better than Ritalin? That stuff did not help me much any way when I was on it in middle school.

There is not a ‘cure’ but there is improvement, and you learn to work around it. Go back to the doctor for ADD: I think there are other medications now. For your textbooks, learn through listening. Go to Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic: www.rfbd.org. You can get all your textbooks downloaded to your computer. If you follow along, your reading speed will pick up by listening and reading at the same time.

You can make it through college with audio books: thousands of people do it every year.

I flunked algebra three times before I made it through. Finally, I took a class that taught it a different way: it turns out I just can’t process it when it’s told to me, but a self-study book that was written for self-study made all the difference.

Accommodations; text to speech and speech to text software for the reading and writing process problems.
PDA for organization and memory problems.
View dyslexia as a processing difference instead of a treatable disease.

Dyslexia is not a disease. It is most likely a neurological disorder in the brain.

The student with dyslexia needs to learn systematic strategies to approach reading, not remediation. An accommodation with the reading/writing problem and the speech to text (and obverse) is helpful. It is physically exhausting for a student with reading problems to read for an hour. It is equal to a five-mile hike in physical impact. The PDA takes the place of lists and paper calendars, which pretty much rule a successful person’s life.

My son writes in cursive using D’Neilian style because it has no fancy loop and is taught with connectors on all lower case letters. This helps him recognize that a group of letters forms a single word and does translate easily to the manuscript print he reads in textbooks. He was tutored following the Orton-Gillingham method. He learned letter sounds and to write them as he heard/said them. The trained tutor followed this multi-sensory approach which gave my son what he needed to succeed. He was tutored three times a week in one-hour sessions from third grade. This was continued during the summers and school years until 7th grade. He also learned sight words. In middle and high school he was in the Beta Club.

He is a successful college graduate with academic awards in his areas of concentration. He will be in graduate school in the fall. He uses MS Word with grammar and spellcheck for his research papers, followed by a final edit by a skilled English student. He also relies on his Franklin Speaking Spelling Dictionary which also reads definitions aloud. (When he was in grade school he used a Franklin Spelling Ace that spoke words aloud and suggested words for whatever misspelled word he typed into the program.)

The bottom line is, the student learns a strategy, or group of strategies, that help accomplish the goal of making him/her literate. It may not be in a conventional sense of what most of us perceive as normal, but in fact we all have little idiosyncrasies in different areas. The student needs to do what works for him/her. The sooner he/she can develop a Standard Operating System for him-/herself, the better. I know many teachers are not receptive, but a strong parent advocate can make them see the light.

Also, remember to teach the child to stand up for him-/herself as early as possible. Self-advocacy will prepare him/her for many situations in life, even if the parent has to follow-up throughout k-12 schooling. College is different and parents no longer have a say in what happens, so the sooner the child can calmly state his/her needs, the better.

At my high school, I’m well known as a great writer and reader with quite a high level of vocabulary. And yet, I’ve been having some strange reading problems. When I read books, for some reason I sometimes have trouble with (usually easy) words like "understand," "hard," and "help." I know that I know what those words mean, in the mechanical sense; I could easily regurgitate definitions and synonyms for those words…But even so, I still feel like my brain isn’t quite processing the meanings of those words, in the context of the book. I feel like I’m drawing a weird kind of blank on those words, like some connection in my brain just isn’t being made, so that I can’t really understand what I’m reading. I’ve noticed that this happens more often with simpler words and phrases (but it also happens with more difficult words too). Yet I have no problem using such words in my own writing. I noticed this problem first starting probably a couple years ago, and it has made reading a struggle, not a pleasure. Occasionally, I can read without any problems, but more often than not, I have trouble. Is it possible that I have a mile kind of dyslexia? Or maybe it’s all in my head and just by worrying about it, I make it happen? Perhaps I’m overconcentrating I feel like maybe it’s not dyslexia, because reading for schoolwork and the SATs is really no problem. It only happens with novels. But even so, could I be dyslexic? Maybe selectively so?

Your not supposed to recognize function words your brain supplies them from the surrounding text. Surely you have had the experience of learning a new word, then suddenly you see the word all the time whereas before you didn’t even know it existed – because your brain was skipping it.

i am a 15 year old girl and i am in the 9th grade. all through school i have had straight A’s and B’s but i have always had alot of trouble reading and understanding words. i usually have no trouble spelling. i have found that after i read something (if i can) i never understand what i had just read. it never makes sense. i have to have someone read it to me for me to understand it. lately i have been noticing this more and it is making school difficult. i can not finish my book reports or research because i cannot read the books. this is taking a serious toll on my grades (i am in academic classes)
also my father cannot read, spell, or write barely at all.
could this be dyslexia?
and if so, could i have inherited it from my father?

EVeryone has their own best way of learning. For me it is seeing something written down. If someone reads to me or lectures me I can’t remember anything! You and I are opposites.

The trick is finding where your strengths are and then using that as much as possible. If reading is going to be slow for you, then set aside more time, try reading out loud yourself, or following with your finger.

If you are seriously concerned about this, talk to your school counselor and see if you qualify to be evaluated for learning styles by your school psychologist.

Good Luck!
