We are starting to work through the focussed spelling tasks. Some points to note (we will add to these as we look at more rules / patterns):

  • Look out for double letters - if vowels are short (weak) and in the stressed part of the word, they need 2 consonants to keep them away from the next vowel. If you can only hear one consonant sound - double the consonant e.g. questionnaire. ('o' is a short sound)

  • Consider the body (root) of a word - think how this is spelt - before you think about suffixes e.g. care + ful +ly > carefully. (Note the 2 'l's as there is one from each tail (suffix)).
